Drink My Sweat is an ongoing photographic documentary project connecting the people who drink coffee to the people who produce it.
The project title, Drink My Sweat, is a reference to the intense work that goes into producing coffee at origin and getting it to the roasteries, roasting it and serving it, even developing a book about it. Hard work and dedication at every step.
Beber Mi Sudor, the first origin in the Drink My Sweat series, is a documentary of Colombian coffee production. It is a result of my introductory trip to a coffee producing country with a Nordic Approach. I already had a close relationship with specialty coffee, but I had a limited and disconnected knowledge of coffee at origin. The trip was approached with a very open mind and open brief. I didn’t have any project objectives and we didn’t orchestrate any shoots. The photography was a visual research project in its genesis, a very raw observation of coffee being grown and processed in Colombia.
Coffee is so much a part of Colombia’s history and economy, that it is almost impossible to think of one without the other. There is such variation in micro-climates, soils, and altitudes, that on any given day of the year there will be a coffee harvest somewhere in the country.
Beber Mi Sudor represents just a small slice of this diverse coffee growing community, but it shows two universal realities; a deep love and respect for coffee, and the daily slog of producing it. It isn’t glamorous, but it is very humbling to be a part of it. We believe this book brings you as close to Colombian coffee as you can get without
leaving home.
When I returned from this epic trip I couldn’t drink coffee as I had before. The knowledge that something so inexpensive and accessible had taken so much effort to produce weighed heavily on my conscience. It made me slow down, to take some time, and to savour the privilege of drinking high quality, ethically sourced and sustainably produced coffee.
