About Mohammed Ali
Mohammed Ali cultivates natural forest coffee on family plots inherited from his father in the heart of the Jimma appellation. The Gera farm, situated at 2,000 meters altitude, hosts a unique forest where endemic species coexist with coffee trees transplanted from local wild varieties.
Recognising the natural wealth of his environment, Ali worked diligently to become an exporter, now selling his crops directly. This full traceability enhances the reputation of the exceptional local agroforestry system, which also produces ancillary products like honey.
Located 40km southwest of Jimma, the Gera farm was established over 70 years ago when Ali's family obtained a land concession from Emperor Haile Selassie's government in 1946. Ali's father chose to transplant coffee plants from the neighbouring Choche forest, now a protected nature reserve, onto the newly acquired plots.
Taking over management more than 30 years ago, Mustafa Mohamed Ali continues his father's legacy, carefully cultivating 25 hectares of the original coffee trees. He maintains the surrounding forest of endemic species, preserving the natural ecosystem. The farm's unique characteristics, combined with manual picking and other traditional farming practices, contribute to the coffee's delicate and floral profile.
