CELEBRATING THE
Women Behind Coffee
GIVING BACK
Supporting the women of Behind The Leaf
This International Women's Day, we're shining a light on Behind The Leaf (BTL), a remarkable micro-mill in Myanmar's Shan State, where women not only cultivate exceptional coffee, but brew change within their community. All of the coffees shown below have been grown, processed and bought from BTL with whom we have a growing relationship with.
HOPE & OPPORTUNITY
Women & coffee in Myanmar
For the past two years, we've championed their work, celebrating the transformational impact they've had on the lives of the 50 women in the Pa-O community who are a part of their workforce.
These women, some of whom are single mothers or widowed, face immense challenges – from supporting their families to surviving economic hardship. Yet, BTL has empowered them with stable income, valuable skills, and a supportive network.
LOOKING ahead
Building a better future
Through BTL's initiatives, the women not only contribute to their families' well-being, but also gain financial independence, confidence, and leadership skills.
From coffee farm managers and roasters to bookkeepers and quality control supervisors, the women of BTL are no longer merely surviving; they are thriving and shaping their own future.
"As their experience & education of coffee processing increases so should their ability to read & write."

LOOKING ahead
Building a better future
Women in Myanmar have historically struggled with representation in the workforce and education isn't exactly encouraged. So when the women of Pinlaung aren't sorting the coffee beans, which thanks to their help now boasts award-winning speciality coffee status, they will also find time to take advantage of initiatives run by BTL like literacy classes, seed exchanges, and seed banks.
Some also juggle the role of working at BTL with raising a family, not an easy feat and a testament to their resilience, strength, and determination.
