HOPE & OPPORTUNITY

Women & coffee in Myanmar

This International Women’s Day, we want to recognize the women who make our coffee possible and support their economic empowerment and social development.

Our partner in Myanmar, Behind The Leaf, employs around 50 women from the surrounding Pinlaung township to process coffee sourced from nearby farms.

These women are now building their lives, supporting their families and learning new skills together as a community.

LOOKING ahead

Building a better future

Women in Myanmar have historically struggled with representation in the workforce and education isn't exactly encouraged. So when the women of Pinlaung aren't sorting the coffee beans, which thanks to their help now boasts award-winning speciality coffee status, they will also find time to take advantage of initiatives run by BTL like literacy classes, seed exchanges, and seed banks.

Some also juggle the role of working at BTL with raising a family, not an easy feat and a testament to their resilience, strength, and determination.

"As their experience & education of coffee processing increases so should their ability to read & write."

THE BUNK BED

Combining work & home life seamlessly

One of their most successful initiatives has been the ‘Coffee Drying, Vegetable Growing Bunk Bed’ system where raised plant beds (with drying meshes placed on top) can be used to cultivate and harvest food while coffee can be processed .

The benefits of promoting sustainable agricultural practices by integrating food production with coffee processing is twofold.

Workers can increase their income by selling their crop and/or keep whatever they need, increasing their household's food security ensuring their households don't go wanting when things get dire.
